Guasti Clemente: A Family Winery Reborn in the Capital of Barbera

A day trip from Villa Asti to Nizza Monferrato — and a winery with big plans.

We made the one-hour drive south from Villa Asti in Mombaldone to Nizza Monferrato to visit Guasti Clemente, and we'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The winery was founded in 1946 by Clemente Guasti, a genuine pioneer who was among the first in Piedmont to label bottles with the specific vineyard origin of the grapes — an early version of what the wine world now calls cru selection. His Barbera delle Cascine Nicesi, still produced today as Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG Cascina Boschetto Vecchio, remains a flagship of the house.

A Grandson's Leap of Faith

In 2013, Clemente's grandson Enrico Piantato left a career in law to take over the family business. He bought the winery from Clemente's sons and set about renovating both the estate and its reputation. Today, Enrico runs the operation from the same historic cellars on Corso IV Novembre, overseeing four estates with around 29 hectares under vine. The flagship wines are the Nizza DOCG and Nizza Riserva — 100% Barbera from some of the finest slopes in Monferrato.

What's Coming Next

There are exciting plans to transform the old bottling facility and cellars into a proper destination — with wine tasting and a restaurant in beautifully restored stone rooms and underground vaults, right in the centre of Nizza. For a town already known as the undisputed capital of Barbera, this feels like a natural next step. We'll be watching closely.

Worth the Drive

Guasti offers six tasting itineraries at their wine shop, available daily by reservation. The Barbera-focused five-wine tour is a standout. The route from Villa Asti takes you through some of the most stunning vineyard landscapes in Piedmont — especially during the autumn harvest, when the UNESCO hills turn gold.
